On the New York City Council’s Ban on Solitary Confinement

The New York City Bar Association applauds the New York City Council for passing a bill that would ban solitary confinement in City jails in most cases. Though an arguably impactful tool in the short term, solitary confinement has negative long-term mental health and public safety consequences that will not move our city closer to a safer, more just criminal justice system. We urge Mayor Adams to sign the bill into law.
