Minority attorneys in New York resign more often than their white counterparts

The New York City Bar Association’s latest diversity benchmarking report found that resignation rates are higher among attorneys who are minorities. That means fewer minority lawyers are able to climb the corporate ladder to become partner, according to the survey of 75 firms—including 24 of the 25 on Crain’s law firms list….For firms, the bar puts together personalized reports showing specific practice areas and levels at which diversity is lacking. One solution is for partners to work with associates to develop their skills and champion their success within the firm. Doing so, the bar says, can keep minority lawyers from leaving. ‘We haven’t made progress quite at the level we hoped,’ said Gabrielle Lyse Brown, director of diversity and inclusion at the New York City Bar. ‘But there are a number of law firm partners who are now really engaged in the efforts to recruit and retain.'”
