Recommendations to the Trump Administration Regarding Corrections and Community Reentry

SUMMARY

The Corrections and Community Reentry Committee (Alex Lesman, Chair) sent a transition memo to the Trump Administration presenting several policy recommendations with respect to incarceration and reentry into mainstream society.  The Committee urged the Administration to continue efforts to limit solitary confinement in federal, state and local prison facilities; to support the removal of cannabis from Schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act; and to maintain the current federal fair chance employment policy.  These and other measures would keep low-level offenders out of jail and focus law enforcement resources on serious crime and terrorism; promote the short-term and long-term mental and physical health of incarcerated individuals; and assist people who have served their sentences in re-entering and becoming productive members of society.
