City Bar Task Force to Study Constitutional Convention

The New York City Bar Association has formed a task force to analyze the advantages and disadvantages of convening a state constitutional convention. In 1977 and 1997, voters overwhelmingly rejected a proposal to hold a convention. Article XIX, Section 2 of the New York Constitution has required a referendum vote every 20 years since 1957 on whether a constitutional convention should be held. Conventions are empowered to recommend wholesale amendments to the constitution, which then must also be approved by voters. The 27-member city bar task force will be chaired by Proskauer Rose partner Margaret Dale and Michael Sonberg, a Criminal Court judge and acting Supreme Court justice in Manhattan.”
