Small Law Firm News – Summer 2010

A NOTE FROM THE SLFC DIRECTOR

“Summer afternoon, summer afternoon; to me those have always been the two most beautiful words in the English language”
~ Henry James

Dear Solo and Small Firm Practitioners,

I hope that during the month of July you will be able to slow down a bit, enjoy a random stroll in Bryant Park, a boat ride around the island of Manhattan or an afternoon reading your favorite novel at the shore. Surprisingly, some of our most effective networking occurs when we are our most casual and relaxed selves –on the beach, at a Central Park Concert or during intermission at a Broadway Show. Somehow, the combination of sunshine, casual clothing and a warm breeze liberate and enable us to actually understand and articulate to others what we do and why we love it.

In the meantime, although during July and August we have no formal Small Law Firm programs here at the NYC Bar, our networking groups continue to meet, I continue to schedule practice management consultations with members, the Small Law Firm Workspace and Conference Room will continue to be open, and the Small Law Firm Community at the NYC Bar remains active in the virtual world of Facebook and LinkedIn. If you haven’t already joined us there, please do so, by clickinghere.

Wishing you a pleasant month of July,

Alla Roytberg

Mixing Beaches, BBQs and Business Development

Do these activities mix? Many attorneys feel awkward about mixing business with pleasure, but it needn’t be. Use the repartee of cocktail conversation to learn more about the work lives of your friends. Then, instead of thinking, “Can I get business from Charlie Brown?” think “How can we work together to help each other?”

Practice Management Consultations

As a Member Benefit of the NYC Bar, any member who is interested in starting and/or growing his/her small law firm is entitled to one free practice management /brainstorming session with Alla Roytberg, Director of the Small Law Firm Center. If further consultations are needed, NYC Bar members can schedule additional consultations with Alla Roytberg at a discounted consultation fee of $50 per consultation. Payment should be by check made payable to “The New York City Bar” in advance of each consultation. A consultation would last up to one hour, as needed.
