Small Law Firm News – September 2010

A NOTE FROM THE SLFC DIRECTOR

“You send your child to the schoolmaster, but ’tis the schoolboys who educate him.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

Dear Solo and Small Firm Practitioners,

Welcome to the fall of 2010 at the New York City Bar. As we end these warm days of summer and send our children to their schools, colleges and graduate schools, we often ponder our own educational experiences. Our law school has taught us how to approach a legal issue, our law firm experience has enabled us to gain confidence in a particular practice area, but it is to our peers that we turn to brainstorm about how to run our business. It is in the Small Law Firm Community of the New York City Bar, its Library, its committees, its workshops and its networking events, that we are able to obtain badly needed advice on how to bill (or not to bill) a client, what computer to purchase, where to turn to for a good quote on malpractice or health insurance or how to build a good website. We learn from our collective successes and failures and emerge, at the end of the day, better informed, more confident and better equipped to face the next day in a life of a small law firm practitioner. Like most members, you will need to continue to make important decisions about health insurance for you and your employees, especially when it comes to managing premium costs.

Whether you use your health insurance benefits to any great extent or not, you will likely face increasing health insurance premiums each year until 2014 and possibly beyond.

So what can you do until then? Read more
