Small Law Firm News – March 2010

A NOTE FROM THE SLFC DIRECTOR

“”I am not young enough to know everything.””
~Oscar Wilde

Dear Solo and Small Firm Practitioners,

In recent weeks I have met with many of you who are in the process of starting your own practice, not by choice, but out of necessity. Whether you are recent law school graduates or seasoned lawyers whose practice areas have been phased out, the common denominator is that many of you are trying to start a new area of practice, the one in which you do not have significant legal expertise. Of course, ideally, we should never start our own law firm or add on a practice area without first being trained and nurtured in a firm by experienced attorneys. However, often in the current market this is no longer a viable option. So what is a lawyer to do? Read more

Health Care Plans at the City Bar

You don’t want to spend more than you have to for health insurance. However, buying a health plan because it’s cheap could do you more harm than good: smaller premiums generally reflect fewer benefits. Make sure you know what coverage is right for your health needs, and be aware of what you may be giving up in return for lower premiums. Don’t wait until a costly illness to understand your health coverage.
