The 2022 Leslie H. Arps Lecture

Former federal judge John Gleeson delivered the Leslie H. Arps Memorial Lecture on April 11 at the City Bar. Judge Gleeson spoke in depth about his work on sentencing reform, which he took up after his sentencing in 1996 of Francois Holloway to a 57-year prison term due to mandatory sentencing requirements. “It kept me up at night,” said Judge Gleeson, who convinced prosecutors to vacate a portion of Mr. Holloway’s sentence and release him. The Leslie H. Arps Memorial Lectures are made possible by the generosity of the firm of Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom LLP & Affiliates. Past speakers have included Hon. Lewis F. Powell, Jr.; Hon. Sandra Day O’Connor and Hon. Elena Kagan. Pictured from left to right are: Kevin Haynes, who was released after 27 years through Judge Gleeson’s efforts; Hon.
