Street Smarts for Women Lawyers: New Book from City Bar’s Women in the Legal Profession Committee Offers Tips for Success

The New York City Bar Association’s Women in the Legal Profession Committee has issued a new book, Street Smarts for Women Lawyers: Practical Tips for Surviving and Thriving in the Legal Profession. The book is a compilation of tips, advice and anecdotes for women lawyers, from women lawyers, on how to manage and succeed in a profession long dominated and run by men. The contributors include law firm partners, in-house counsel, law professors, consultants and others who have successfully navigated their careers.

The book is organized into ten broad categories ranging from “Take Charge of Your Own Career” to “Make Your Own Happiness,” and provides advice on building social capital, developing a personal brand, seeking leadership positions and cultivating clients. The publication includes an introduction by Lisa Pearson (a partner at Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton LLP). While the intended audience is women lawyers at the beginning or middle stages of their careers, the book offers real-world advice rooted in hands-on experience that can benefit any lawyer in making short-term and long-term career plans.

Founded in 1989, the City Bar’s Women in the Legal Profession Committee focuses on empowering women in the legal field at all stages of their careers. The Committee dedicates its time and energy to promoting the full participation of women lawyers in the legal profession, and offers programs to support women in both their professional and personal growth. The Committee is composed of women who share a passion for the practice of law, a vision for wanting to make a difference in the profession and a commitment to support and empower each other to achieve their goals.

To kick off the book’s distribution, free copies of Street Smarts will be available at our upcoming event “The Power of the Purse: How Women General Counsel Supporting Women Outside Counsel Makes Good Business Sense” next Monday, June 6; 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm.
