Recently Enacted Legislation: Providing Additional Enforcement Mechanisms for Collecting Spousal or Child Support

Governor Andrew Cuomo signed a bill into law on September 29, 2016 that will provide for additional enforcement mechanisms for the collection of spousal or child support. This bill was supported by the Matrimonial Law Committee and would make it easier to hold a party who has defied a Supreme Court order in contempt, helping to enforce orders in matrimonial cases, including collecting support due to spouses, ex-spouses and children. The new law goes into effect immediately and applies to all actions whenever commenced as well as all judgments or orders previously entered.
