House Passage of the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act

The New York City Bar Association applauds the passage of the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act (H.R. 1280) by the House of Representatives. We commend the leadership the House has shown in prioritizing this important legislation, and thank Representative Bass and Representative Nadler for their sponsorship of the bill. We also appreciate President Biden’s declared support for the Act.  The City Bar is committed to supporting a fair, equitable and anti-racist criminal justice system and we believe police reform is a vital part of that mission. The Floyd Act is an important corrective step to an urgent social problem.  We call on the Senate to prioritize passage of a companion bill so that we can move forward as a country in rebuilding trust between law enforcement and the communities they serve.
