First in the Nation Right to Counsel Law for Low-Income Tenants in NYC

“New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio signed into law on Aug. 11, 2017 a Right to Counsel in Housing Court bill that had overwhelmingly been passed by the New York City Council (Intro 214-B)…..According to a 2016 study by the NYC Bar Association, there were 77 percent fewer eviction warrants for tenants who had legal representation in Housing Court, compared to tenants who did not have legal representation (without regard to the merits of the particular case). In 2016, there were 22,000 evictions in the City, with the highest number in Bronx County….The law has been praised by many, including the NYC Bar Association, advocacy groups and providers of legal services for low-income families.”
