City Bar Association Backs Legislation to Ban Cat Declawing

The New York City Bar Association on Thursday publicly applauded the state Legislature’s passing this week of a ban on most cat declawing, calling the procedures—when done for nonmedical reasons—“typically unnecessary and inhumane” and “roughly comparable” to amputating a person’s fingers at the last joint. In a news release Thursday, the bar association gave a strong and detailed statement in support of the newly proposed ban, which must be signed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo to become law.
