The New York City Bar Association will hold its inaugural Intellectual Property Institute on January 24, 2024. The full-day program will provide a comprehensive overview of recent trends, developments and cutting-edge issues across multiple industries, including publishing, artificial intelligence, media and entertainment. Practice areas include trademark, copyright, First Amendment and defamation, rights of publicity and patent law.

Suzy Wilson, General Counsel and Associate Register of Copyrights, United States Copyright Office, will give a luncheon keynote address, and an evening social hour will allow attendees and speakers to network.

Topics covered will include:

  • The special issues of IP rights that arise in U.S. Government contracts and the unusual challenges in negotiating IP rights for acquisitions of systems and services that include AI.
  • Jack Daniels v. VIP Products and other recent First Amendment and fair use decisions impacting the fair use landscape.
  • Recent trends in Patent law, including “functional claiming” and the Supreme Court’s recent Amgen v. Sanofi decision on patent enablement regarding the scope of a patent.
  • Recent IP-related issues facing the theater industry.
  • Discussion of modern anti-SLAPP law, defamation and the First Amendment.
