On the Enactment of the Respect for Marriage Act

The New York City Bar Association celebrates the historic milestone that our country has reached with the enactment of the Respect for Marriage Act, which codifies recognition of same-sex and interracial marriages into law. This new law makes the United States a more tolerant, more inclusive and more just society. The City Bar has been a longtime supporter of marriage equality, in keeping with our mission to promote reform of the law and to uphold access to justice in support of a fair society. We applaud Congress for demonstrating extraordinary bipartisanship and for taking this action to ensure that all Americans are free to openly consecrate the love in their hearts.
