The role of in-house counsel is unique in the legal profession. Unlike their counterparts in other settings, in-house counsel not only provides legal advice to their client/employer, but also participates as a business partner in the results of the advice rendered. Effective in-house counsel create value by imparting sound legal advice, while also weaving themselves into the fabric of the business. This symposium will focus on the dual role of in-house counsel as lawyer and business person, how in-house counsel can create value for themselves and their companies, and best practices for meeting these challenges.
An expert panel will discuss the following topics:
Privacy and Cyber Security:
With the growing trend towards greater transparency in how companies collect, use, store, and secure personal data, in-house counsel need to have a better understanding of the technology and technological methods employers use in processing personal data. In-house lawyers need to understand these developments to assist them in collaborating with their business colleagues in areas such as policy drafting, data breach responses, and data protection law compliance. Our panel will provide insight on the ways in-house counsel can position themselves to create more value in this area.Blockchain Technology:
Many speak about Blockchain, but do in-house counsel truly understand its intricacies and how it can benefit their careers? Our panel will provide an understandable concept of blockchain technology, how this technology affects in-house lawyers, and what they can do to prepare their companies for its use.Disaster Planning:
The key to a well-thought out disaster recovery plan is an intimate understanding of the company’s technological infrastructure. Employers engage their in-house counsel in both executing these plans and dealing with the fall out when plans go awry in the face of a disaster. This panel will advise attendees on the skills in-house counsel should develop in familiarizing themselves with their employer’s systems so they can assist in drafting sound policies, help mitigate the risks of failure, and handle the aftermath of a calamity. The program will be followed by a networking luncheon for all participants.
