(Webcast) Integrating Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion into the Core Law Curriculum: A Fireside Chat with Professor Teri McMurtry-Chubb

Friday, February 4, 2022 | 9:15 am – 10:45 am

  • Law student experiences with race and racism affect how they navigate law school, legal education, and the legal profession. This program will provide information on how law schools and law professors have struggled for years to integrate issues of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) into the core law school curriculum and what steps should be taken. Professor Teri A. McMurtry-Chubb, Associate Dean for Research & Faculty Development Professor of Law, UIC School of Law and author of Strategies and Techniques for Integrating Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion into the Core Law Curriculum A Comprehensive Guide to DEI Pedagogy, Course Planning, and Classroom Practice will provide practical and strategic guidance on how to integrate DEI into the core law school curriculum by effectively developing and implementing concrete instructional methods to reach law students that are grounded in an acknowledgement of racism as trauma.  Topics include how to understand multigenerational racial trauma in the context of American legal education; the tension between academic freedom and DEI; and assessing the institutional climate for DEI curricula.  In addition, two case studies of implementing DEI in the law school curriculum will be discussed.
