  • During the Supreme Court’s October 2015 Term, the Court is considering an extraordinary number of blockbuster cases – all while the Court is short-handed as a result of the passing of its most outspoken member, Justice Antonin Scalia, and the political logjam that has prevented consideration of his successor during the Presidential election season.  At this program – always one of the City Bar’s most interesting and well attended – a prominent panel comprised of Supreme Court litigators, constitutional scholars, and a federal judge will review and discuss the leading Supreme Court decisions of the Term and their future impact.  The panel will also explore the impact of Justice Scalia’s death, as well as the Senate’s constitutional role in providing advice and consent for Court nominees. The speakers represent diverse points of view and perspectives, and will provide their unique insights concerning the Court’s decisions.

The panel will specifically address the most important decisions of the Supreme Court’s Term, which include cases touching on a number of areas of law:

    • First Amendment, Affordable Care Act (Zubik v. Burwell)
    • Immigration Law, Federalism, and Separation of Powers (U.S. v. Texas)
    • Abortion Rights, Equal Protection and Voting Rights (Whole Women’s Health v. Hellerstedt; Fisher v. University of Texas; Evenwel v. Abbott)
    • Class Actions and Business Issues (Spokeo v. Robins; Tyson Foods v. Bouaphakeo; Campbell-Ewald v. Gomez; RJR Nabisco v. The European Community)
    • Criminal Law and Procedure (Montgomery v. Louisiana: Williams v. Pennsylvania: Birchfield v. North Dakota; McDonnell v. U.S.)
