NYC Bar Announces
Fourth Annual Diversity Champion Award Winners

When: Wednesday, May 27, 2009; 12:15 p.m. to 2:15 p.m.
Where: New York City Bar Association, 42 West 44 th Street

The New York City Bar’s Enhance Diversity in the Profession Committee will be presenting the Fourth Annual Diversity Champion Award at an Award Ceremony and Luncheon on May 27 th, 2009. The award recognizes the critical role individual attorneys have played in initiating and sustaining change within their organizations and the overall New York legal community. The Fifth Annual Diversity Conference, entitled Overcoming Challenges Facing Diversity in the Legal Profession: Concrete Steps to Combat the Touch Economic Climate & Leaky Pipeline, will immediately follow the luncheon.  

The 2009 Diversity Champion Award winners are:

LaShann DeArcy , Associate, Gibson Dunn & Crutcher LLP
Ms. DeArcy has made a lasting impact on the diversity of the New York legal community both through her active participation as the chair of her firm’s New York diversity committee, and through her public service in the community as a mentor to many young lawyers and students of color.

Hon. Charles J. Hynes , Kings County District Attorney
As a community leader and prosecutor, Mr. Hynes has used his expansive view of diversity and inclusion to redefine the job of a District Attorney and establish innovative programs that empower and strengthen Brooklyn’s diverse community while at the same time serve as nationwide models for others to follow.

James R. Silkenat , Partner, Arent Fox LLP
Mr. Silkenat is a tireless advocate concerning the need for and the importance of diversity in the legal profession, especially through his role in the creation, funding and operation of the American Bar Association’s Legal Opportunity Scholarship Fund, which is intended to make sure that the legal profession mirrors the public it serves.

These individuals embody the New York City Bar’s Statement of Diversity Principles, which defines diversity as an inclusive concept, encompassing race, color, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, religion, nationality, age, disability and marital and parental status.

About the Office for Diversity
The Office for Diversity, the first of its kind in a bar association, was created in 2004 to work with NYC legal employers to foster more diverse work environments. The Office serves as a resource for individuals seeking to advance and develop their careers, as well as to assist law firms, corporations and other legal employers in their diversity initiatives.

About the Association
The New York City Bar Association ( was founded in 1870, and since then has been dedicated to maintaining the high ethical standards of the profession, promoting reform of the law, and providing service to the profession and the public. The Association continues to work for political, legal and social reform, while implementing innovative means to help the disadvantaged. Protecting the public’s welfare remains one of the Association’s highest priorities.
