Condemning the Horrific Attack on Former President Trump

The New York City Bar Association condemns the horrific attack on former President Donald Trump at a political rally on July 13, which resulted in the tragic death of a spectator and horrendous wounding of others, including Mr. Trump. This assassination attempt sent shock waves not only among the attendees at the event, but also throughout America and the world. We hold all those affected by this tragic event in our thoughts.

This country is founded on the rule of law, and has steadfastly for nearly 250 years relied on the peaceful resolution of differences by our constitutional democratic system, in our courts and through free and fair elections. Violence has no place in our political process and must be universally condemned. We note that the incident is being investigated as an act of domestic terrorism, and we urge all not to jump to conclusions nor to cast blame where it does not belong.

The City Bar has repeatedly called out the dangers of violent rhetoric, especially for partisan political purposes. We have called upon members of the bar to take the lead in assuring the peaceful resolution of political differences and again urge the profession to stand strongly in support of the rule of law. And we urge all Americans to stand together in opposition to political violence.
