Report on legislation which would extend temporary disability insurance benefits to cover family care leave from the workplace

SUMMARY

The Committee on Sex and Law expressed support for legislation to expand Temporary Disability Insurance (TDI) to provide limited wage replacement for individuals who need to take family leave from the workplace. Currently, TDI covers leave related to a worker’s own illness or injury, including pregnancy and childbirth, but does not cover any form of leave related to the care of others. The proposed legislation, the report notes, is critical to the health, well-being and economic security of New York’s working families, as it will provide partial wage replacement to workers who need time off to care for a seriously ill family member or to bond with a new child.
