Lawyer Assistance Program Committee

The Lawyer Assistance Program Committee welcomes all members of the City Bar seeking to further the health and well-being of the legal profession. A recent national Mental Health and Substance Use Survey shows that a significant number of lawyers and legal professionals struggle with mental health (including burnout, stress and anxiety, and depression) and substance-use disorders. The goal of the Committee is to support the Lawyer Assistance Program (LAP) in helping lawyers, law students, judges, family members and legal staff cope with these challenges, which can destroy personal lives and derail careers.

Committee members plan, co-sponsor and participate in events and CLEs, and are involved with outreach about LAP’s free and confidential services, within the City Bar and to law firms, the judiciary and law schools. Committee members can also play a vital role as LAP volunteers, acting as monitors, providing peer support and educating the bar and bench. The Committee year is capped by the annual Volunteer Appreciation Celebration honoring an outstanding contributor to LAP.

All lawyers, judges, law students and their family members in the five boroughs of New York City and Westchester are eligible for LAP’s free and confidential services. You do not have to be a member of any bar association to access LAP assistance.

CONFIDENTIAL HELPLINE: 212-302-5787, available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. In addition to the personalized services LAP provides, recovery groups are available for those individuals who can benefit from this additional support. For more information on LAP please click here.
