Statement by New York City Bar Association President Roger Juan Maldonado on Passage of Voting Reforms

The New York City Bar Association applauds the State Assembly and Senate for passing crucial voting and election law reforms among its first actions of the 2019 Legislative Session. Voting reforms were among the City Bar’s top legislative priorities. With New York consistently ranking as one of the worst states for voter turnout and growing increasingly out of step with the rest of the country in how it conducts its elections, the need for reform has never been greater. By passing early voting, permitting “no excuse” absentee voting, establishing a single primary day, and providing for Election Day registration, New York will take a significant step forward in modernizing its voting system and making it less complicated to register to vote and cast a ballot. In addition, closing the LLC loophole will help control the flow of corporate money into campaigns and shed light on who is contributing to candidates. Providing New Yorkers full access to the voting booth without unnecessary hurdles will ensure they can make their voices heard and support policies that best reflect their beliefs.
