Skies Unfriendly to Pets Avoiding Perils of Airline Travel

“An estimated 5,000 of the 500,000 pets that are flown annually fail to reach their destinations safely, according to the Air Transport Association, a trade organization for major U.Animal rights advocates think that figure is too low….’It’s a conservative number, because airlines aren’t required to keep statistics,’ said Manhattan attorney Jeff Delott, a member of the New York City Bar Association’s Committee for Legal Issues Pertaining to Animals. Owners who seek recourse from the airlines often come up short. ‘A bag has more value in the court’s eyes than a dog,’ said Escalante’s attorney, Mason Pimsler. ‘Owners are entitled only to veterinary expenses they incur, but nothing for pain and suffering.'”
