Report hails New York as a model for local criminal justice reform

“New York’s successful efforts to reduce incarceration rates and reform its criminal justice system should serve as a model for other states and localities, especially given the anticipated chilling of reform efforts at the federal level. That’s the finding of a new report by the New York City Bar Association that looks at mass incarceration….’Because the vast majority of incarcerated persons are in state prisons and local jails, an enormous amount can be accomplished in our own backyards,’ John F. Savarese, chair of the bar association’s task force that released the report, said in a statement. ‘Considering the state of our national politics, in the area of mass incarceration the focus may need to be local.'”
