Raising the Bar of Hope: Black Women in Leadership at the City Bar – November 30, 2021

 

New York City Bar Association Executive Director Bret Parker moderates a panel of distinguished Black women who serve in leadership positions on the City Bar Board of Directors. In this third program in a Presidential Series highlighting issues concerning Black women, we celebrate the achievements of these impressive legal professionals who are leaders in the profession and at the City Bar. Learn about their professional journeys and why they joined the City Bar; in what ways participation in the City Bar has contributed positively to their professional and personal lives; their path to City Bar leadership; and their hopes for the City Bar as it continues on its path to be a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive institution.

In this program, we celebrate the achievements of these impressive law professionals who are leaders at their respective institutions and in the profession, and we learn about their professional journeys — challenges, successes, concerns, and aspirations — as our profession strives to become more diverse, equitable, and inclusive.

Raising The Bar of Hope: Ending The Over-Policing of Black Girls in Schools – March 4, 2021

A discussion on the policing of Black girls in schools, the consequences, and achievable equitable remedies. Panelists explore the historic lens of the treatment of Black girls and how they are viewed by society; the types of punishments and procedures they are subjected to; and the long and short term consequences of being pushed out of school. Also, Karen Aime, a former student of the Brooklyn public school system shares how her school’s preconceived notions of her as a Black girl affected her student experience.
