NYPD Legal Official on Interplay of Police Technologies

The top New York Police Department legal official on Tuesday argued that the public benefits of data-gathering from phones, body cameras and other technologies far outweighs concerns from some advocates about privacy and “predictive policing.” During a panel discussion organized by Public Advocate Letitia James at the New York City Bar Association, Lawrence Byrne, deputy commissioner of legal affairs at the NYPD, spoke about the operating guidelines for the body camera pilot program, the footage of which has a retention length of one year, unless the footage becomes relevant to further legal action, with the pilot set to expand to 5,000 units over the coming year.
