Money for the National Institutes of Health (Letter to the Editor)
To the Editor: Re “Double the N.I.H. Budget,” by Newt Gingrich (Op-Ed, April 22): “It is refreshing to read that a noted fiscal conservative endorses the government’s ‘unique’ role in fostering medical research intended to achieve breakthrough cures and treatments. With recent advances in genetic information and technological innovation, we stand on the brink of a potential revolution in the management of numerous insidious diseases affecting millions of Americans. Increasing and indeed doubling the National Institutes of Health budget would help substantially in these efforts. Let’s hope that Congress seizes this moment to act.”
