The quest to shatter the proverbial “glass ceiling” for women often ignores what some call the “concrete ceiling,” the seemingly impenetrable barrier that women of color face along their professional ascent. The traditional continuum of success in the legal profession must be disrupted to ensure that the inclusion and diversity agenda is transparent, actionable, measurable, and impactful. This session will explore ways to individually and collectively navigate and reframe the nuanced challenges women of color face in the legal profession. Additionally, we will discuss key accountability methods for organizations to support women of color’s success.
Proceeds from this program will support public high school students in the Office for Diversity & Inclusion's Thurgood Marshall Summer Law Internship Program, which places students in summer internships with legal employers for the summer. While the program cannot continue at its usual capacity this year due to Covid-19, the Office is working with its signatory law firms and corporate legal department as well as individual supporters to cover internship stipends for a cohort of high school seniors who will summer at government and nonprofit agencies.
