IRS Adding Staff But Retirements Continue, Officials Say

The Internal Revenue Service is pushing to increase staffing at the agency but it is facing continued retirements that drain the agency’s knowledge base as well as job competition from other employers, agency officials said Tuesday…. The IRS Criminal Investigation division has about 2,100 special agents, down from about 3,600 agents 20 years ago, division chief Don Fort said. That puts CI staffing where it was about 50 years ago, despite population growth, more tax returns being filed annually and a more complicated tax system, Fort said on a panel hosted by the New York City Bar Association.
