CRL 50-a: City Bar Applauds Repeal

Today the New York State Legislature took an important step towards restoring the public’s trust in police accountability. With the repeal of CRL 50-a, patterns of police misconduct – including repeated misconduct by individual officers – will no longer be shielded from public view, and law enforcement will be more accountable to the communities they serve.  The New York City Bar Association applauds the bill sponsors, Assemblymember Danny O’Donnell and Senator Jamaal Bailey, Speaker Carl Heastie, Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins and all legislators who helped champion this measure. We also applaud Governor Cuomo for his public support for the bill and look forward to his swift action to sign it into law. Repealing CRL 50-a will be a significant tool to combat injustices and abuses of power in our criminal justice system.
