Attorneys Expect SDNY White-Collar Focus Will Continue After Bharara

“John Kiernan, president of the New York City Bar Association and co-chair of the litigation department at Debevoise & Plimpton, said Monday that practitioners, more than anything, want consistency and professionalism out of the office. ‘Everyone recognizes it’s the president’s prerogative to select and remove U.S. attorneys,’ Kiernan said. ‘But lawyers generally view the office as nonpartisan, so, while there is recognition that it’s not a lifetime appointment, most lawyers … think that a U.S. attorney’s tenure should be merit-based and would support an extension.’….Kiernan said there ‘have been terrific U.S. attorneys, and the private marketplace, the defense law marketplace, tends to recognize their excellence and their judgment when they are making the important call on whom to indict and whom not to indict.'”
