Albany Needs More Lawyers (Editorial)

Eric Schneiderman is worried lawyers will be discouraged from going to Albany….Schneiderman was reacting to the reform package pushed by Gov. Cuomo. It includes a provision that would require all legislators to disclose not only how much they earn in outside income but what work they’ve done to earn it and who’s paying them….It will be “very challenging” to force it on lawyers, he told Capital New York. The New York City Bar Association doesn’t seem to agree. In a 2010 report, it said there might be rare exceptions that could be sorted out by a special committee on a case-by-case basis. But it also said “there is no basis for excluding lawyers from the public scrutiny to which legislators should be held.”
