Ruling Feeds Hopes for End of NY Office Requirement

A decision by New York’s highest court interpreting a state law requiring nonresident attorneys to have an office there in order to practice has raised hopes in New Jersey and elsewhere that the statute will ultimately be struck down as unconstitutional….The New York City Bar Association has also stayed out of the case but spokesman Eric Friedman said its position is reflected in a 1993 opinion by its Committee on Professional Responsibility that recommended abolishing the local office requirement as unconstitutional and bad policy.
