Proposed Rule Would Offer Temporary Admission

In 2012, the state bar, the New York City Bar Association and the New York County Lawyers’ Association, in a joint report, recommended permitting lawyers admitted in another U.S. jurisdiction to provide temporary legal services in limited circumstances. The report pointed to scenarios in which clients and their lawyers would benefit, such as where local counsel recommends engaging an attorney with special expertise, or where the client has an ongoing relationship with an out-of-state lawyer who is tapped to evaluate the services of the local counsel.
