Panelists Hear Concerns About Adopting Uniform Bar Exam

The testimony, which questioned the worth of a “portable” law license, the potential impact on minority students and readiness of law schools, came at the first of three hearings on adopting the Uniform Bar Examination (UBE) in New York at the City University of New York School of Law. In October, Chief Judge Jonathan Lippman proposed the state adopt the UBE used in 14 other states….Mark Morril, chairman of the New York City Bar Association’s Council on the Profession, said the exam was “an important reform” boosting job prospects for new lawyers. Speaking on behalf of the city bar, he said the UBE “correctly focused on testing the competence of the candidate on fundamental legal principles and lawyering skills that are important to entry-level practice.”
