NY Legal Groups Spar Over Unified Bar Exam Proposal

The New York state court system on Monday released comments submitted regarding its proposal to adopt the Unified Bar Exam in the state – drawing feedback from organizations, attorneys and law students alike – with the New York City Bar Association notably voicing its support and the state bar writing in opposition….The New York City Bar said in its comment that the Unified Bar Exam “presents important advantages” over the current exam, and that it also supports considering experiential learning as an alternative to the traditional written bar exam. “Such an alternative way of demonstrating competency to practice law may be more accessible to some applicants, while still fulfilling the important consumer protection element of bar testing,” the city bar wrote. “It may also have the practical effect of increasing the amount of skills-based learning available to prospective lawyers.”
