Judge Who Guided Pro Se Plaintiff Recuses Himself Sua Sponte

[Judge Jack Weinstein] also noted an upcoming pilot project that the Eastern District of New York will be carrying out in partnership with the New York City Bar Association’s City Bar Justice Center. Weinstein’s decision appended the still-open job announcement for an attorney in the Federal Pro Se Legal Assistance Project. In an interview, Lynn Kelly, executive director of the City Bar Justice Center, called the pilot project ‘a great step forward for closing the justice gap for people in federal court.’ Kelly said she hoped the program, offering assistance to non-prisoner, pro se litigants, would be running by early March. Modeled after a program in the Northern District of California, Kelly said the project’s attorney would assist litigants in matters like advising on discovery orders or whether a settlement offer was reasonable. Kelly said Floyd would be the sort of person who could benefit from the program.
