Mental Health Law Committee

The Mental Health Law Committee focuses on legal issues concerning mental health and intellectual disabilities, ranging from civil rights, to access to medical care, to guardianship, to best practices in the legal profession. The Committee’s work has included:

• City Bar testimony expressing legal and policy concerns about NYC Mayor Adams’ directive on “mental health involuntary removals”;
• Helping to craft successful legislation to allow Supported Decision-Making in New York state (a less-restrictive alternative to guardianship);
• Advocating for removal of a mental health question on the New York State bar application;
• Recommendations to improve federal mental health policy; and
• Bringing prominent speakers on mental health topics to the City Bar.
