The program is designed for mediators who have completed the minimum 24 hours Basic/Initial Mediation Training and interested in learning how to assist parties in their disputes at Surrogate’s Court using the mediation process. Most concerns presented in Surrogate’s Court cases are not merely legal disputes but involve ongoing relationships between the parties and family members. The training will provide the participants with the overview of the various types of Surrogate’s Court cases referred to mediation and learn the skills to support parties in the mediation process; by giving them the opportunity to voice their differences, gain clarity on the issues and make choices on how they will move forward with their conflict.
This 16-hour training is approved under Part 146 of the Rules of the Chief Administrative Judge. Final placement on any court roster is at the discretion of the local Administrative Judge and participation in a course that is either approved or pending approval does not guarantee placement on a local court roster.
Attendance at all four days of the program is required. Space is limited and advanced registration is strongly advised.

Community Mediation ServicesJoAn is in charge of the development and supervision of mediation programs in Queens Civil Court, Surrogate’s Court, Housing Court, Family Court, Community Mediation, Special Education Mediation, Elder Care Mediation, Divorce Mediation and Lemon Law Arbitration. She also oversees the growth and development of CMS training programs including the Basic Mediation Training, Apprenticeship Training, Conflict Coaching and Restorative Justice practices. As a certified mediator, JoAn has mediated over hundreds of civil, community, and family mediation cases. She received her Juris Doctor degree from Northern Illinois University in 2004 and is a member of the Illinois State Bar since 2005.
Prior to her work in mediation, JoAn was involved in various disciplines all of which influence her work in mediation. JoAn was a member of Hedwig Dances, the critically acclaimed and award winning dance company in Chicago. She has also choreographed and performed her works in International Dance and Theater Festivals in the United States and Asia. For the past eighteen years, JoAn has practiced and taught Ashtanga Yoga as a vehicle to promote health and peace in her community.
Originally from the Philippines, JoAn has worked for non-profit organizations in the Philippines (Philippine Educational Theater Association, Asian Council for Peoples Culture and Bugkos) that serve the Filipino community with theater education and advocacy in its fight to eradicate poverty and address the social inequality that cripples this developing nation. Now as a New Yorker, JoAn is dedicated to empowering her local community by cultivating understanding, peace, and hope with the skills and processes of conflict resolution.

Diversity Scholarship Opportunity: Surrogate’s Court Mediation Training
The City Bar and Community Mediation Services are pleased to offer a limited number of scholarships to the upcoming Surrogate’s Court Mediation Training – 16-Hour Online Training program in an effort to encourage diverse attorneys to consider adding Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) to their practices. This programs is approved under Part 146 of the Rules of the Chief of the Chief Administrative Judge and satisfies the training requirements of many local court ADR panels.
Note that attendance at all four days of the program is required. The program will run virtually on the following dates: September 15, 17, 22 & 24, 2020 from 9 am – 1 pm on each day.
