During this CLE, we will hear from panelists with a rich variety of backgrounds. Together, we will address the negative impacts of COVID-19 on women and caregivers, from an employment perspective. For example, as primary caregivers for their children and loved ones, many women have been required to stay home and provide care to other family members when no other care was available during the pandemic (e.g. for school-aged children who were remote learning or otherwise unable to attend daycare or school in person). Some of these women were unjustly terminated from their positions or faced other consequences in the workplace as a result. Unfortunately, it doesn’t stop there. There are other ways the pandemic has affected women far more than men because of existing gender based discrimination in the workplace, such as the treatment of pregnant women, thereby compounding systemic problems. Decades of progress for women in the workforce have potentially come undone as a result of COVID-19. In addition to discussing these impacts, the CLE will review key legislation, such as the Family First Act legislation, and some of the key cases under which women have sought protections. Lastly, panelists will share their perspectives on where we go from here and any radical innovations, policies, or ideas they have implemented or have contemplated in their own workplace (or their clients’ to help prevent, or at the very least mitigate, some of these consequences.
