Program Chair & Moderator:
Lanier Saperstein

  • New York’s Department of Financial Services stated in October 2020 that “Financial risks from climate change are unprecedented.” U.S. SEC Commissioner Allison Herren Lee observed in November 2020 there “is a growing consensus that climate change may present a systemic risk to financial markets.” In March 2021, the SEC’s Division of Examination announced that it is “enhancing its focus on climate and ESG-related risks.” European regulators have been focusing on climate change and financial risks for several years. The French Treasury, for example, issued rules as early as 2015 imposing reporting requirements on institutional investors and financial asset managers headquartered or registered in France.

Insurers, depository institutions, asset managers, mortgage originators and others are acutely aware of and trying to grapple with the very real costs, and the ensuing risks imposed by those costs, of climate change.

A distinguished panel, including Nina Chen, DFS’s first ever Director of Sustainability and Climate Change Initiatives, Azish Filabi, Executive Director of the Maguire Center for Ethics in Financial Services and an Associate Professor at The American College of Financial Services, and Charlotte Gardes, Deputy Head of the Sustainability Finance & Climate Risk Unit of the French Treasury will discuss the financial risks of climate change, what regulators around the world are doing about it, and the practical steps financial institutions and other companies are taking.
