NYC High School Students on What the Declaration of Independence Means Today
Sponsorship Opportunities
On May 15 in this 250th anniversary year of the Declaration of Independence, the City Bar’s Civic Education Committee will gather 200 NYC high school students from multiple schools for a day of study, discussion and presentations on our nation’s founding document and its relevance today.
With orientation from Chief Judge Laura Taylor Swain of the SDNY and historian Lisa Andersen of the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, and working alongside volunteer lawyers and educators serving as facilitators, students will explore the Declaration’s meaning and reflect on whether its grievances still resonate today, debate whether the Declaration has lived up to its own promise, and consider what a modern declaration of independence might look like.
The event is not open to the public, but the Committee looks forward to reporting on what the next generation of Americans is thinking about many of the issues on our minds this 250th anniversary of America.
Produced by the Civic Education Committee, the event is made possible by its sponsors: Barket Epstein Kearon Aldea & LoTurco, LLP; Davis Polk & Wardwell LLP; Foley Hoag LLP; Marshall Dennehey; Nixon Peabody LLP; Patterson Belknap Webb & Tyler LLP; Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP; and Willkie Farr & Gallagher LLP.
Additional Sponsorship Opportunities
Sponsorship is needed to cover the cost of a modest breakfast and box lunch for the students and their teachers. Sponsors will be recognized in the event program and on the City Bar website in content related to the event.
