City Bar Celebrates Women’s History Month and Pioneering Female Lawyers

Barbara Paul Robinson! Ms. Paul Robinson is the first female president of the New York City Bar Association (1994-1996) and became Debevoise & Plimpton first female partner in 1976. Ms. Paul Robinson is a graduate of Bryn Mawr College and Yale Law School. In 1967, she established the firm’s flextime program for child-rearing attorneys, the first of its kind in New York.

Bettina “Betsy” Plevan is the second female president of the New York City Bar Association (2004-2006) and is a partner at Proskauer Rose LLP. Ms. Plevan is a graduate of Wellesley College (1967) and Boston University School of Law (1970). Ms. Plevan served as the first chair of Women in the Profession for the City Bar.

Patricia M. Hynes is the third female president of the New York City Bar Association (2008-2010). She is a graduate of Queens College (1963) and Fordham University School of Law (1966).

Justice Sheila Abdus-Salaam (1952-2017) was the first African-American female judge to serve on the New York Court of Appeals. She was a graduate of Barnard College and Columbia Law School. Justice Abdus-Salaam was a giant, a great friend and a mentor to so many attorneys and judges. Her death is a loss to the legal profession.
