Project Coordinator | Veterans Assistance Project

The City Bar Justice Center (CBJC) seeks an enthusiastic and organized individual who is committed to equal access to justice to join our team as a Project Coordinator principally for our Veterans Assistance Project. CBJC annually provides high-quality, free civil legal services benefiting roughly 25,000 New Yorkers who lack the resources to hire private counsel. CBJC also relies on partnerships with law firms, corporate legal departments, the courts, the City Bar, and other stakeholders. In 2020-21, roughly 2,000 pro bono attorneys donated services to support legal services clinics and client matter work drawn from CBJC’s dozen civil legal services projects.

CBJC’s Veterans Assistance Project (VAP) provides free legal assistance to veterans in New York City communities facing systemic socio-economic barriers, and attempts to break down those barriers by providing pro bono legal assistance particularly on issues related to claims for service-connected disability compensation from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). VAP operates a dedicated telephone intake line and provides veterans with brief advice and information while also screening cases for possible placement with pro bono attorneys, whom VAP trains and mentors. Volunteer lawyers assess possible legal remedies and help veterans file claims and appeals with the VA. Assistance ranges from locating service documents and medical records to preparing and filing claims and directly representing veterans at hearings. Since its inception, VAP has leveraged millions of dollars’ worth of free legal services to provide legal assistance to thousands of veterans, and recovered nearly $10 million in retroactive benefits in addition to ongoing disability benefits.

The Project Coordinator works closely with and under the supervision of VAP’s attorney Project Director to handle the following areas of responsibility, among others:

  • Conducting intakes with prospective clients to gather facts about their service-connected disabilities
  • Carefully maintaining client and volunteer databases and diligently tracking case statistics
  • Organizing both virtual and in-person training programs and legal clinics
  • Reviewing client records and providing caring follow-up assistance to clients, who typically seek our assistance at very vulnerable moments in their lives
  • Drafting memoranda and filings on cases under the supervision of the VAP Project Director
  • Liaising with attorney volunteers from large firms, corporate legal departments, and in solo practice
  • Assisting in the preparation of grant applications and other fundraising activities
  • Other City Bar Justice Center administrative work, including with other CBJC Projects as needed

Candidates for this position must be available for in-person work at our office, which reopens in September with a hybrid schedule requiring roughly 10 days of in-office work per month, with the balance of time being work-from-home. (CBJC’s hybrid schedule is new and will remain subject to review and revision.) The City Bar requires all employees, including this position, to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 to enter our building.   • Bachelor’s degree or substantially equivalent work experience in a professional setting.
  • Minimum 6 months of work experience (relevant internships acceptable).
  • Strong organizational and project management skills; high attention to detail; excellent verbal and written communication skills; comfortable communicating both by telephone and in direct contact with the public.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365, and the ability to quickly learn and effectively use LegalServer and other technology; strong data-entry skills.
  • Demonstrated enthusiasm for public interest legal work, serving communities that are under-resourced, and advancing racial equity and social and economic justice is required.
  • A team player with an ability to interact respectfully with clients, volunteer attorneys, government employees, and fellow staff members.
  • Spanish speaking and writing abilities preferred but not required.

We are looking for candidates for this entry-level position who are willing to make a minimum commitment of two years to the Project Coordinator role.

This is a Local 153, Office and Professional Employees International Union position, with a starting annualized salary of $42,500 based on a 35-hour workweek, and benefits and other employment terms and conditions determined by an existing collective bargaining agreement.
