Duration: Three-month part-time project, with possibility of extension and expansion of role based on program results

The Cyrus R. Vance Center for International Justice

The Vance Center advances global justice by engaging lawyers across borders to support civil society and an ethically active legal profession.  The Vance Center is a unique collaboration of international lawyers catalyzing public interest innovation.  A non-profit program of the New York City Bar Association, we bring together leading law firms and other partners worldwide to pioneer international justice initiatives and provide pro bono legal representation to social justice NGOs. 

Consultancy Description

The Vance Center is developing a program in Latin America to recruit companies and law firms to sponsor recent law graduates as public interest law fellows working at nonprofit organizations providing legal services to individuals and nonprofit organizations lacking resources to pay for such services.  The members of the Pro Bono Network of the Americas, which the Vance Center co-coordinates, will collaborate with the Vance Center in the program. 

The consultant will support the development of the program, including identifying potential sponsoring and hosting organizations, designing the structure and components, drafting information materials, preparing funding proposals, and otherwise providing coordination.  The consultant will report to the executive director of the Vance Center.

 

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Legal training and experience sufficient to fulfill the role of the consultant, with JD and public interest law experience preferred.
  • Experience or demonstrable familiarity with existing public interest fellowships in the United States and/or elsewhere in the world.
  • Experience or demonstrable familiarity with legal institutions, including law schools, law firms, and legal service organizations, and business entities in Latin America.
  • Excellent research, writing, and communication skills.
  • Fluency in English. Fluency in Spanish is highly desirable.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills and great attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and remotely
  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S.
