Statement of City Bar President John S. Kiernan on the Passing of Judge Sheila Abdus-Salaam

The news that Judge Sheila Abdus-Salaam passed away brought shock and sadness to the New York City Bar Association. Judge Abdus-Salaam was a vital presence in our lives and the definition of a role model. As the first African-American woman to serve on New York State’s highest court, she was a trailblazer and an inspiration to all who aspire to fulfill their potential and engage in public service. She served on our Executive Committee as a Vice President and was a passionate advocate for enhancing diversity in the legal profession. As a long-time supporter of the City Bar Thurgood Marshall Summer Law Internship Program, she presided over mock trial competitions, gave keynote addresses, and provided mentorship to students who sought to pursue a career in law. She had a profound impact on many lives and will be very much missed. Our thoughts are with her family, friends and colleagues in the Court.
