City Bar Summer Series

This annual series features three areas where lawyers and law students can learn about critical and practice areas for that year. We hold these programs in person and stream the panel presentations virtually.

Each program consists of a panel presentation followed by small group discussions led by our panelists and other attorneys for attendees to ask questions and gain significant insight into these exciting practice areas.

This series is free for students and alumni of our sponsoring law schools. To become a sponsoring law school, contact Connor Doyle at cdoyle@nycbar.org.

Over the past decade “ESG” – environmental, social, and governance – has become a popular business catchphrase. As employees, customers, and corporations are increasingly interested in the social implications of their work, many companies have adopted ESG programs and policies. To support those companies, there is a growing demand for attorneys with relevant expertise. Indeed, countless law firms now market themselves as having “ESG law” practices. But what exactly is “ESG law”?
Far from being a unified practice area, ESG involves many varied sub-fields. Lawyers interested in this space may focus on areas such as energy law, compliance law, corporate law, and procurement law. What background might you need to practice in ESG? What entry-level job experiences offer the best learning opportunities? And how can you position yourself to grow in this emerging field? This panel will make ESG more concrete and offer practical tips for career success.

Careers in Cybersecurity

Cybersecurity and data privacy concerns continue to escalate, making this a hot legal market to enter. International, federal, state, and local laws and regulations in cybersecurity and data privacy are rapidly evolving in response to emerging issues that seem to change almost daily.
In response, organizations are working hard to comply and protect the information they hold, paving the way for law firm, in-house, and public sector opportunities for new lawyers, or lawyers in transition. Panelists will discuss how they got started in these areas and what they recommend for breaking into this growing and exciting area of the law.
