Volunteer Lawyers in the Classroom
Connects volunteer attorneys with local private and public schools as well as educational programs to provide students with exposure to the profession.
The City Bar matches volunteer lawyers with local private and public schools and educational programs. Legal professionals visit schools and programs to assist with a variety of programming that range from coaching Mock Trial teams, to facilitating workshops and speaking engagements meant to increase students’ understanding and exposure to the law, the legal system, and the legal profession.
If you are a teacher/administrator that would like a volunteer lawyer to visit your classroom; or an attorney who is interested in volunteering, please contact Monica Parks at (212) 382-6772 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
Spring 2013 Workshops
This Spring, the City Bar Committee on Sex & Law will visit public high school classrooms to offer workshops on Teen Dating Violence.
Teen Dating Violence
Teen dating violence is a pervasive problem in our schools. Many teens may not even be aware of what teen dating violence looks like or how to deal with it. Our training will address and attempt to dispel myths about who is a likely victim or perpetrator of teen dating violence. We will discuss how teen dating violence manifests itself in relationships and offer teens ways to identify it both in their relationships and those of their peers. We will discuss resources that are available to individuals facing teen dating violence, including resources within and outside of the legal system and social services. We also will address ways in which parents, the police and city agencies such as the Administration for Children’s Services are involved in combating teen dating violence.
