Letter to the President of Nigeria regarding Boko Haram

SUMMARY

In a letter to Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan drafted by the Committee on African Affairs and joined by the Committee on International Human Rights, the Association urged President Jonathan to use all necessary measures to protect the Nigerian population from the atrocities committed by Boko Haram, and to ensure that the Nigerian military, which reportedly has committed human rights violations, respects the country’s obligations under international humanitarian law while combating the insurgency in Northern Nigeria. In addition, the letter asks President Jonathan to maintain his support for the African Union’s mandate for the regional military force to combat Boko Haram, which will be submitted to the United Nations Security Council for approval.
